Founder’s Journey
For some, soap is just one aspect of daily grooming; but for others, like for our founder Sharmeen Fathima soap is to the body what laughter is to the soul. It is therapeutic. For her, skin care has been synonymous with self-care and nature. Why does one have to take a break to indulge in beauty rituals? Why can’t it be a part of our daily grooming routine? Growing up, Fathima saw her mother, aunts and grandmothers pounding and crushing fresh flowers, herbs, spices and grains, with oils, into potent beauty potions. As a child, her bathing rituals were elaborate, indulgent and completely inspired by nature.
This led her on a perennial quest for natural soaps, which evoked her childhood memories. The soap had to be natural, nourishing and utterly pampering with healing benefits. Unable to find one that ticked off all the boxes on her wish list, Fathima decided to create her dream soap herself. After an intensive training spanning a few months, she made her first soap –100 % coconut oil soap with lemon essential oil. She fell in love with the creative process of making soaps, and decided to combine it with her passion for essential oils.
This was in 2016. What started as a hobby became a stress-buster. Every day would be a new experiment with oils, aromas and textures. Her inner circle of family and friends were more than happy to test new samples every week. There were times when Fathima also created personalized soaps to cater to a person’s skin type and personality. Soon, the word spread, and the ‘Chennai soap lady’ was famous. That’s when the Chennai Soap Company was born.

We are a quaint, little soap company right in the middle of the bustling city of Chennai. All our soaps are lovingly made by hand with finest nourishing ingredients derived from nature. We take care to make our soaps in small batches, using cold-pressed method to preserve optimum freshness.
Most of our soaps are pure extra virgin olive oil-based, made the traditional way. What makes olive oil stand out in skincare is the high percentage of the good oleic acid versus a low ratio of linoleic acid. Its light molecular structure makes it suitable for all skin types. Olive oil deeply conditions the skin, prevents the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and even treats atopic eczema in kids. To ensure that optimal efficacy of this ingredient, we source the purest form of olive oil from some of the best cultivations in the Mediterranean countries. It is the preferred carrier oil in aromatherapy as it doesn’t have any distinct aroma of its own.
We also have 100 % coconut oil soaps. Besides cleansing and moisturizing benefits, the coconut oil based soaps have antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, which help to deal with many kinds of skin issues. Soaps made with coconut oil also provide a nice bubbly lather naturally. Since each type of oil brings different properties to the final soap, we also have our signature blends to provide maximum conditioning and cleansing benefits.
What’s more? Our soaps smell divine! While the common advice is to find soap as per your skin type, we nudge you to go a step further, and find a soap whose fragrance is in sync with your mind. The sense of smell is most intimately linked to the deepest parts of the brain, which directly controls emotions. As we inhale certain aromas of essential oils, it triggers an emotional response. For instance, the smell of roses is uplifting, while lavender is relaxing.
We experiment with a range of shapes, colours and aromas to transform your daily baths to indulgent rituals. Each bar of soap is carefully hand finished and then packaged in eco-friendly muslin bags.

We use only organic-certified ingredients, including extra virgin olive oil, which is the backbone of our soaps. We then infuse our formulations with botanical extracts and pure essential oils. We don’t believe in adding synthetic preservatives to our products to increase their shelf life. That’s why we intentionally do everything on a small scale with a very conscious effort to maximize the benefits. All our soaps are made by hand, in small batches to preserve the freshness of the ingredients. Our olive oil comes from the most amazing cultivations, in the Mediterranean region. At Chennai Soap Company, we believe in good vibes. We believe that a thing of beauty should be a joy for everyone. That’s why we ensure that our ingredients are not just organic certified but also ethically sourced.
Aroma
Through our soaps we aim to elevate your daily bathing routine to a pampering sensorial ritual. All our soaps are enriched with essential oils with a specific purpose to heal, uplift and rejuvenate. While we do have soaps where one single scent is the hero such as Kashmir Lavender, Absolute Rose, Moringa and Sandalwood, we are best known for our signature blends -- Lavender and chamomile, Tea Tree and Peppermint, Almond Vanilla and Sweet Orange Cinnamon among others. We are different from any other soap you may have ever used because we combine the best of perfumery and aromatherapy with best of soap making techniques.
Technique
Our soaps are made using the cold-press method, which means these have no added detergents, which strip the skin of its natural oils. Cold process soap is made through a chemical reaction between lye – sodium hydroxide and oils.
Eco-friendly
We feel soaps are gentler on the environment than shower gels and foams, due to both the ingredients and minimal packaging. Our soaps are never tested on animals...only willing bathers!
